Syllabus Pattern – SSC

SSC CGL Exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission every year. The exam takes place in 4 Tiers. The full form of ‘SSC CGL’ is Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level. SSC CGL job is an important part of the functioning of bureaucracy. Once you qualify the exam, you are hired under Group ‘B’ or Group ‘C’ posts. SSC CGL exam is conducted for the recruitment to various subordinate services like:

  • Assistants in Ministries/Departments, Attached and Subordinate office of the Govt. of India.
  • Inspectors of Central Excise & Customs.
  • Inspectors of Income Tax.
  • Preventive Officers in Customs.
  • Examiner in Customs.
  • Sub-Inspectors in Central Bureau of Narcotics & CBI.
  • Assistant Enforcement Officer in Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue.
  • Divisional Accountant, Jr. Accountant, Auditor & UDCs in various offices of Govt. of India.
  • Auditor Offices under C & AG, CGDA, CGA & others.
  • Accountant/ Junior Accountant
  • Tax Assistant in CBDT and CBEC
  • Compiler in Registrar General of India.

SSC CGL Exam Pattern & Selection Process
SSC CGL Exam Pattern is different for every stage of the exam. Marking scheme and syllabus differs from stage to stage. The SSC CGL Exam pattern consists of 4 Stages as mentioned below:
Stage 1: SSC CGL Tier I
It is a computer based online test of 200 marks in 60 minutes. There is a negative marking of 0.50 Marks for each wrong answer. There is no sectional cut off and you are required to achieve the overall SSC CGL cut off.

Stage 2: SSC CGL Tier II
This is an online exam consisting of 4 papers as mentioned in the table. There is no sectional cut off. The negative marking for each wrong answer as follows:
Paper I – 0.5 marks, Paper II – 0.25 marks, Paper III & Paper IV – 0.5 marks

* For handicapped candidates, 2 hours 40 minutes would be allotted for each paper.

Stage 3: SSC CGL Tier III
Tier III exam is conducted in an offline mode. This is a descriptive paper in English or Hindi. This section generally includes essay writing, formal letter writing, informal letter writing, precis writing etc. It carries a total of 100 marks and total time allotted is 60 minutes.

Stage 4: SSC CGL Tier IV
Tier IV of the SSC CGL Examination consists of two tests Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) & Computer Proficiency Test (CPT). This test is of qualifying nature.

Syllabus for SSC CGL Exam

The detailed Tier Wise Syllabus to Prepare for SSC CGL Exam is as follows:

Tier 1 exam
200 questions from General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness/ General knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. 75 minutes duration with negative marking for incorrect response. The syllabus for Tier I Exam is as follows

General Intelligence and Reasoning: Classification, Analogy, Coding and Decoding, Puzzle, Matrix, Word formation, Arranging words in Logical order or Dictionary order, Venn Diagram, Directions and Distance, Blood Relations, Missing Number, Series, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning.

General Awareness: Static GK, Science, Current Affairs, Geography, Finance and Economy, Polity.

Quantitative Aptitude: Number System, Simplification, Average, Problems on Age, Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Time and Work, Mixture, Time, Distance and Speed, Interest, Profit and Loss, Number Series, Data Interpretation, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry.

English Language: Reading Comprehension, Fill in the blanks, Spellings, Phrase or idiom meaning, One word substitution, Phrase replacement/ Sentence correction, Error Spotting.

Tier 2 exam
This has 4 papers namely Quantitative Ability, English Language and Comprehension, Statistics (only for the posts of Statistical Investigator Gr. II & Compiler), General Studies of Finance and Economics (Only for the post of Assistant Audit Officer). 200 marks for each paper is allotted with a duration of 2 hours. Negative marking is applicable. The syllabus for Tier II Exam is as follows

Quantitative Aptitude: Number System, Simplification, Average, Problems on Age, Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Time and Work, Mixture, Time, Distance and Speed, Interest, Profit and Loss, Number Series, Data Interpretation, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry.
English Language: Reading Comprehension, Fill in the blanks, Spellings, Phrase or idiom meaning, One word substitution, Phrase replacement/ Sentence correction, Error Spotting.
Statistics: Collection and Representation of Data, Measure of Dispersion, Measure of Central Tendency, Moments, Skewness and Kurtosis, Correlation and Regression, Random Variables, Sampling Theory, Analysis and Variance, Time Series Analysis, Index Number
General Awareness: Static GK, Science, Current Affairs, Geography, Finance and Economy, Polity.

Tier 3 exam
Descriptive paper for Essay Writing, Letter/Application Writing, Passage Writing, Precis writing etc.. The paper is conducted for a duration of 1 hour for 100 marks. It is an offline paper i.e. pen and paper based test.

Tier 4 exam
Data Entry Skill Test/ Computer Proficiency Test for 15 minutes. This exam is qualifying in nature. No negative marking and no marks allotted.

Data Entry Speed Test

  • This test is conducted to test the typing speed of the candidates.
  • The candidates are required to type a paragraph on the computers.
  • Time allotted is 15 minutes

Computer Proficiency Test

  • This test is conducted to test the skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Time duration: 45 minutes

Note: This exam is to be attempted only by the aspirants who have applied for the post of Tax Assistants, Central Secretariat Service, Ministry of External Affairs and Inspector.
